I had expected the Crimea to be the highlight of our Dneiper River Cruise but it was not to be. 5 years later, we are finally here.
Our first stop was the small port of Feodosiya on the eastern side of the peninsula. There wasn't much to see in the city itself, but there is the Genoese Fortress at Sudak, about 1 1/2 hours ride away. It was built in the 13th century by the Genoese as a trading post for commerce along the Silk Road north of the Caspian. This fortress is well preserved and is a UNESCO heritage site.
Based on the site description, the weather forecast, and the length of the drive to Sudak, I decided to skip the excursion. As you will see from Bob's photos, it was a long climb up to the ruins and the weather was forecast to be in the high 80s. Also, there was nowhere to sit in the shade and wait the return of the adventurous travelers. So I relaxed on board ship while Bob helped one of our frail elderly fellow travelers to make the climb. Shamed again...
