The falls are a mile wide and the best approaches are on the Zimbabwe side. You can see in these pictures how much mist is tossed up by the 300 foot drop to the gorge below. The Zambezi has been steadily cutting its gorge up river over millennium and there are several abandoned falls further down river through the gorge. Sort of like Niagara Falls. These falls absolutely stop all navigation on the river at this point so you have to portage around them for miles and miles.
